Message from the Coordinators

Hi! My name is Zaina and I am a Palestinian-American teaching Special Education in New York City. I participated in IKIC last year as a teacher in the K-2 program and cannot wait to be back. For me, IKIC was a great opportunity to learn and connect with my culture, work with brilliant kids, and build upon my role in serving Palestine. Teaching with IKIC has been a transformative and invaluable experience. The opportunity to teach abroad helped me expand my teaching skill set and general understanding of what it means to be a culturally-responsive teacher. Beyond the education benefits, I loved working alongside driven individuals coming from different backgrounds. Ultimately, however, this program gave me a chance to meet Palestinians throughout the West Bank, learn about their struggle, and gain a better understanding of what they need. These are ongoing lessons for me, which is why I am so excited to return to Palestine with IKIC.

I’m excited to say this is my fourth year as an English teacher at the Ramallah Friends Lower School and this will be my second year as coordinating staff with I Know I Can.  Working with staff that had education and life experiences from all over the world was great, but the collaboration of skills was what made everyday fun and challenging.  From water balloon relay races, to k-pop dance, to the civil rights movement, students are immersed in a holistic learning environment that gives them the opportunity to be experimental, critical and expressive.  On top of everything, the students and staff show up everyday, with the intentions of having fun.
